Elon Musk is being sued by his ex Grimes over parental rights of the pair’s three children.

The move comes after the musician accused Musk of keeping her away from their three-year-old son, X, last month.
As a result, Grimes filed a “petition to establish parental relationship” on September 29 in a California court. She did so because she and the Tesla founder aren’t married and she wants the court to determine who is considered the children’s legal parent.

Grimes didn’t request child support or custody rights for the children, with Musk having yet to respond to the petition that, while made public, remains under seal.
Grimes and Musk’s relationship
Grimes and Musk began dating in 2018 and were involved in an on-again, off-again relationship until September 2021 when they split up for good.

The Canadian musician gave birth to their firstborn, a son named X Æ A-Xii, in May 2020. The couple also welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, aka Y, via surrogate in December 2021.

Last month, journalist Walter Isaacson’s ‘Elon Musk’ biography revealed that the duo also had a third child, a boy named Techno Mechanicus, who they dubbed Tau.

After Isaacson tweeted photos of the billionaire’s twins, Strider and Azure, whom he shares with Shivon Zilis, Grimes wrote in a since-deleted tweet: “Tell Shivon to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer.

“I have never even been allowed to see a photo of these children until this moment, despite the situation utterly ripping my family apart.”

Grimes later explained days later she had spoken with Zilis to de-escalate the matter.

“I spoke with Shivon at length finally, which was long overdue. This wasn’t her fault, plz don’t be angry at her!,” she wrote.

“We respect each other a lot and we’re excited to become friends and have the kids grow up together.”
